I begin with quoting the latest issue of Femina
July 2, 2008 Femina (www.femina.in)
Experience speaks
“If I haven’t slept well the previous night, I go down to the car park, switch on the air-conditioner in my car and take a 25 minute power nap. It not only refreshes me but also leaves me with time for a light, healthy lunch.” Aditi Kumar 31
NO. We must never practice this.
Every year we hear so many deaths due this reason only. Femina is one of the most trusted and prestigious women’s magazine in India. It has been helping the young girls in building up their confidence and in living with respect in this world for about half a century. However this (sitting in a parked car with AC On) may misguide many and bring forward more accidental deaths. I think a doctor can throw more light on this issue, as far as I know it puts the passengers of the car to sleep for ever, very silently and does not even give time to escape or ask for help.

most probably fumes that emnate within the car are carbon mono-oxide which is colorless and odourless gas. carbon mono oxide is lethal for blood cells because it form methhemoglobin. The problem is patient slowly loses consciouness without feeling anything. But I think it mainly happens when AC is on , doors closed and garage shut.
In anycase this is dangerous advice. I agree magazines like Famina should have been careful.
